Cal Poly’s Mustang Family Weekend

Cal Poly’s Mustang Family Weekend is only a short week away, providing students and their loved ones with a fun and exciting time on the Central Coast. Combined with alumni weekend, this will be the perfect opportunity to learn more about Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” motto and enjoy the Homecoming Football Game versus UC Davis! There are tons of ways to learn more about your student’s home here in San Luis Obispo though, so don’t miss out on these fun spots and activities to make the most of your time here.

SLO Farmers Market

If you’re planning on heading to the Central Coast early for Family Weekend, you can’t miss the famous San Luis Obispo Farmers Market. The perfect way to enjoy the area’s local culture and culinary finds, the farmers market has become a staple for every resident and visitor. There’s no better way to spend Thursday evening, buying fresh produce and getting a delicious dinner!

Homecoming Football Game & Tailgate

Experience life like a Cal Poly student at the Homecoming Football Game and Tailgate! Located on campus at the O’Neill Green, the tailgate is your opportunity to mingle with locals, alumni, and current students. Beginning at 3pm until 6pm game time, you will be able to eat some of the best barbecue, play fun games, and get ready for a great night of football. Don’t forget to stop by the University Store, either on campus or downtown, to stock up on green and gold gear!

Zipline Tour

Margarita Adventures in Santa Margarita gives you and your family the chance to experience the Central Coast from an entirely new perspective: from the sky! Soaring over one of California’s landmarks, the historic Santa Margarita Ranch in Paso Robles wine country, you will embark through six different ziplines. This thrill ride is like no other, with a combined distance of 7,500 feet and rides right over the vineyards. The fun doesn’t stop there though, as your guides and instructors will tell you about the ranch’s sustainable wine-growing practices and its history as a part of California’s Mission Trail. If you want a full wine country experience, stay at the Paso Robles Inn, which is located just a short drive from Margarita Adventures. They offer wine themed rooms with private mineral spas and a convienent location to many of the gorgeous Paso Robles wineries!

Hike Ontario Ridge Trail

Ontario Ridge Trail is a popular hike with many residents and students of Cal Poly, but it’s also the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Central Coast! Starting at Cave Landing near Avila Beach, these steep hills will take you up to one of the best views in the county overlooking the gorgeous waters of Avila and Pismo Beach. A fun way to enjoy the sunshine and our beautiful nature, you’ll be amazed at the merging of the land and the sea. Admiring the views of the gorgeous mansion-lined cliffs isn’t too bad either!

Kayaking Through Sea Caves

Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer, there’s always ways to enjoy the beaches of the Central Coast! Kayaking has become a hugely popular activity in Pismo Beach, becoming a favorite way to enjoy the waters during cooler days or the sunshine on those warm ones. Pismo Beach offers an unparalleled beach experience though, with a kayaking tour through amazing sea caves. You’ll move your way through arches, natural grottoes, and rock gardens only accessible in these slim and dynamic kayaks. The views of the coastal bluffs and protected coves from this perspective are unbeatable, and you’re unforgettable experience is even documented with pictures included from your expedition. Enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean during your entire trip this Family Weekend by staying at an oceanfront hotel, like Best Western Plus Shore Cliff Lodge, Pismo Lighthouse Suites, or Inn at the Cove. These provide exceptional oceanfront rooms and private gazebos to enjoy the views of Pismo Beach.

Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach

Avila Beach is a must-see when visiting San Luis Obispo, with its quaint cottages and oceanfront dining options. Something unique to Avila though, are the different piers and their uses. One of these, called the Cal Poly Pier, has a special history related to Avila Beach and Cal Poly. Originally named the Unocal Pier for its use by the Union Oil Co., the pier was used for oil operations from the 1910s until the mid-1990s. In 2001, Unocal donated the pier to Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics as the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences. Cal Poly students and faculty actually visit the pier often for classes and marine science research, but it’s also the perfect way to safely interact with natural wildlife. The pier even has future plans of expansion of the facility for more classroom, public education facilities, and research space! Stay at Avila Lighthouse Suites, located right on the Avila Promenade, to be within walking distance of these fun activities!
