California Wine Month: Wineries with Excellent Reds

The Central Coast is famed for its production of delicious, award winning wines. Typically Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the first to come to mind when thinking of Central Coast appelations, however, winemakers from Arroyo Grande to Paso Robles have challenged this idea with recent creations of beautiful, award winning red wines in a wide range of varietals.

In Celebration of California Wine Month, we compiled a list of our favorite award-winning Central Coast red wines.

Opolo Winery

Opolo has grown wildly popular as a destination for locals and visitors over the past few decades. Located on Paso Robles’ increasingly popular Vineyard Drive, Opolo boasts an impressive collection of both whites and reds. Recently, Opolo won recognition as maker of Paso Robles’ best Zinfandel, Mountain Zinfandel, and three of their other red varieties, the Serenade Red Blend, Summit Creek Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon, have achieved critical acclaim through ratings of 90+ points each.

Brecon Estate Winery

Brecon Estate is an incarnation of the idiom: “hidden gem”. Located just beyond Opolo on Vineyard Drive in Paso Robles, Brecon boasts a small, but highly devoted following by their wine club and even other wine makers in the area. Though Brecon is somewhat of a new kid on the block, their stunning property and highly revered Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Meritage wines have garned the small winery a stellar reputation for delicious wines, both red and white.

Silver Horse Winery

Silver Horse Winery is a unique winery in Avila’s See Canyon that boasts a wide range of delicious reds with great value. The winery was honored with several awards during the 2017 Central Coast Wine Competition, and impresses guests with its wide offering of varietals and gorgeous property. Pay the old schoolhouse a visit for a day of wine and celebration!
