Hidden Gems of the Central Coast: Del Monte Cafe

The Central Coast is full of hidden gems unknown to the average traveler.  Residents flock to certain beaches, restaurants, and shops for unique and special items native to this area.  Although visitors love the abundance of delicious restaurants fit for the most devoted foodie, many of the best eateries are concealed in the midst of more popular or crowded spots. Breakfast is often regarded as the best meal of the day, since you can go salty, sweet, or savory all in one sitting. The classic American diner is always a perfect breakfast option and Del Monte Cafe offers San Luis Obispo residents and visitors these delicious dishes. Complete with a rich history and a changing specials board that’s hard to beat, Del Monte is sure to serve up some amazing breakfast originals.

Del Monte Cafe sits near the San Luis Obispo train station, just a short drive from the downtown area. Its almost secluded area is distanced from the hustle and bustle of Higuera St., making this spot perfect for a lazy weekend morning. Originally a small grocery store in the 1900s, Del Monte has now been serving food since 1981.

Del Monte has a genuine diner feel, without the bright red and white decor or showy knick-knacks, complete with tons of booth seating and a breakfast bar. The outside patio, which is also dog-friendly, feels like your own backyard with its trellis fencing and gorgeous greenery the surrounds the tables. The constantly changing specials board are always serving up some of the most delicious classics and unique spins on those tastes we love.

Menu favorites like fluffy blueberry pancakes and omelettes, all for a reasonable price, make Del Monte a staple on the Central Coast. The quaint building provides the perfect backdrop when chowing down on croissant french toast, salmon cakes, or huevos rancheros, complete with a diner cup of coffee or a refreshing orange juice. The service staff might be busy, but the friendly, family atmosphere makes every experience here worth it. They will even bring out a basket of toys for the kids while you wait on your food!
