A family vacation to the Central Coast will whisk you away from the stress of everyday life for an unforgettable getaway. The Central Coast offers year-round fun for all ages but we especially love the Central Coast attractions available during summertime! Our Multi-Property Senior Sales Manager, Sandy Wirick, has shared her favorite kid approved activities to do during summer and her tips to live like a local during your next visit. Take it away, Sandy!
Hello! My name is Sandy Wirick and I have been a resident of the central coast for over 25 years. I love this area and the people in it. My husband and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Every day I have get to drive by some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. Every season on the central coast is a delight. In the summer, there is nothing better than dipping your toes in the cool ocean water.
My son is 4 years old and he has been exploring the outdoors from infancy. Every weekend he puts on his “explorer” pants, packed with a flashlight and magnifying glass, ready to see the sights. One of our favorite hikes is in the Oso Flaco Preserve. This delightful walk (about 1mile) takes you over a bridge that skims the surface of Oso Flaco pond. The bridge turns into a walking path that will lead you directly to Guadalupe beach. This beach is a local’s spot, where you will see fishermen catching dinner and families searching for sand dollars. We like to pack a lunch and enjoy the tranquility of this secluded beach.
Another favorite activity is, of course, a visit to the beach. The most family-friendly beach on the Central Coast is Avila Beach. Here you will find a playground that even grown ups will want to play in. Basketball and beach volley ball courts will keep older kids active and off their phones. We love to explore the tide pools with their mix of sea stars, anemonies and crabs. In the summer the Avila Beach Golf Course offers concerts on the weekends and if you sit to the north of the beach, you can enjoy the music without paying the entrance fee. You don’t have to pack a picnic to visit this beach because there are restaurants and ice cream shops all along the board walk. We love to visit the Beach N’ Yogurt shop for a cool treat. On mother’s day, our tradition is to stay at the Avila Lighthouse Suites. The hotel is just steps from the sand and provides a nice resting place from the sun. We always like to spend the morning at the beach and come back to the hotel to lounge next to the pool.
