6 Spots for Summer Sunset Sipping

It’s one of those long summer nights, and you’re sipping on your favorite wine while soaking in the vibrancy of another colorful Central Coast sunset. What could be better? This dream could be reality this summer with a visit to the Central Coast, a region with no shortage of fantastic sunset views – and of course, local high-quality wine galore. Whether your preference is a panorama of hills and mountains alongside a deep Cabernet Sauvignon, or if you’d rather watch the waves go by while taking in the glistening sand and endless ocean and sipping a Chardonnay, the Central Coast has got you covered! Read on for our recommendations for the 6 Best Spots for Summer Sunset Sipping, as summer kicks off later this month.

At Montana de Oro State Park

Montana de Oro is a large, secluded beach state park that the locals love. With acres of relatively untouched trails, beaches, cliff paths, and wildlife, Montana de Oro offers a taste of the wilderness just fifteen minutes away from San Luis Obispo. Sunsets are particularly beautiful here; watch the sunset over the sweeping ocean while you hear the waves lap up to shore.

Cliffside at Your Hotel

The cliffs and private beach alongside the Inn at the Cove are private, gorgeous, and are often described as a well-kept secret of the Pismo Beach area. Every Wednesday, we here at Inn at the Cove offer a Sunset Wine & Yoga class in order to take advantage of this fantastic view. This evening glow Yoga flow class takes place outside the hotel on the grassy cliffs, where the calming ambiance will make you want to come again and again! Top off the relaxing class with a glass of wine to enjoy as you watch the summer sunset beyond the Pacific horizon.

At a Winery

World-famous wine country in Paso Robles is a natural choice for sunset sipping on the Central Coast. Try visiting a vineyard on Highway 46 in Paso Robles! Eberle or Daou Winery are both excellent options – Eberle has fantastic views of acres of rolling vineyards and offers free tastings and Daou enjoys a vivid picture of brown, pleasant hills which alight with flaming color during the golden hour. Or, visit Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery on Friday evenings for their weekly Train Wreck Friday event, featuring live music from 5:30 PM to sunset, so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over the vineyard and rolling hills as you indulge in wine available to purchase.

Quaint Avila Beach

Enjoy a glass of wine in downtown, ocean-front Avila Beach. Sit on the patio of one of Avila’s oceanfront restaurants or bars during a warm summer evening. Pierfront Wine & Brew and Blue Moon Over Avila are two popular beachfront wine bars where you can enjoy local wines, fun board games, and panoramic ocean views, all just steps away from accommodations at Avila Lighthouse Suites. After sipping, walk along the beach and maybe dip your toes in the sand while the remnants of the gorgeous sunset remain!

At a Park with a View

Pismo Beach offers some secluded parks, up on the hills above the ocean, that only the locals know about. From Highland Park, you can sit, relax and drink a glass of wine with a view that makes you feel like a local. Or, if you’d rather dine in, grab a table at Ventana Grill down the cliff from the park. While waiting, you can walk down the bluff path to the gazebo at Shore Cliff Hotel, and watch the sun’s final rays.

Atop a Peak

Hike Cerro San Luis, Bishop’s, or even Valencia Peak in Montana de Oro. The satisfaction of finishing one of these intermediate peaks will make you feel like you deserve a glass of your favorite wine! And the views from the top are panoramic and unforgettable on clear days, which are frequent during summertime.
