7 Fun Events to Celebrate Bike Month

Happy Bike Month! Biking regularly boosts your mood, fitness, and heart, and can even shave time off your commute! Whether you live in an area like the Central Coast with smaller amounts of traffic or a major metropolis, biking can boost your mood when you don’t have to deal with rush-hour traffic and congestion. Additionally, the trails and bike paths on the Central Coast are fantastic and make it a no-brainer to choose to pick up your bike to get where you need to go. Many local businesses and organizations celebrate Bike Month on the Central Coast this May, with fun events and races! Friday Avila Ride
Friday, May 18th and 25th
On May 18th and 25th this month, join a big group for a casual ride to Avila Beach’s Mersea’s Restaurant! The ride starts at Meadow Park in San Luis Obispo, and ends at the restaurant at the end of Hanford Pier in Avila. Watch the sunset over the bay, and return back with the group to San Luis Obispo! Bring a bike and water for this casual hour-long ride which will take you through gorgeous hillsides and ocean views. The perfect way to unwind on a Friday evening! Flanders Bicycle Month Events
Friday, May 18th and 19th
Celebrate Bike Month with friends and the crew at Flanders Bicycle with a happy hour from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday. Flanders will also have a Bicycle Swap Meet on May 19th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Bike to Work Day
Friday May 18th
This is the biggest event of Bike Month! Celebrated all across SLO County, multiple locations will host bike breakfast stations for commuters. With prizes, giveaways, and food available, why wouldn’t you take this day to commute via bike to work? Also, don’t miss the evening Bike to Work Day After Party with the Bikes & Beauty Fashion show!

Bicycle Rodeo
May 19th
Bring the kids to this education and fun event! The San Luis Obispo Police Department will teach riding skills and safety tips, and following the clinic, there will be a BMX stunt show and a road ride through the neighborhood.

Paso Robles Cycling Festival
May 25th – May 28th
Visit the Paso Robles Cycling Festival to celebrate food, cycling, and local culture! The Sunday FunDay ride shows off some of the best cycling in the Paso Robles area, and also offers a free picnic lunch at a local winery. The festival takes place at the Paso Robles Event Center and other places around town!

SLO Tour De Donut
May 26th
Biking with frequent stops for donuts… What more could you ask for from a race? This bike race is put on by the Cal Poly Triathalon Team, and brings the entire community together and donates all proceeds to the SLO Food Bank. Everyone who participates rides to three different local donut shops and easts as many donuts as possible in a 10 minute window. After everyone is stuffed, the participates race up Perfumo Canyon (a steep hill in between SLO and Avila Beach), where the race winners will be crowned.

Pedal to Paella
May 27th, 4 pm – 8 pm
Another fun bike tour that combines biking and food, the Pedal to Paella races through Santa Margarita for an hour before resting at the Educated Gardener to enjoy Paella and music. Meet at Santa Margarita Park at 4 pm to start, and bring something to drink, a dish to share, utensils, and cash for the paella and band! Contact the Educated Gardener with any questions.
