May Local Featured Item: Central Coast Strawberries

Here on the Central Coast, we’re lucky to be located near some of the country’s freshest farm ingredients. In an effort to highlight the abundance of local produce in our area, The Steakhouse at the Paso Robles Inn offers special menus that feature a “Local Featured Item” each month. This month you’re in for something sweet—as Central Coast strawberries are the focus of our May special menus.

Strawberries on the Central Coast

According to a report by the State of California, strawberries are primarily produced along the coast between Santa Cruz and Ventura County—making the Central Coast the leading strawberry-producing area in the entire state!  Here, main production season is from March to December, thanks to our mild climate that allows for a long harvest season and multiple plantings and harvests each year. Because of these ideal growing conditions, San Luis Obispo county saw more than 3,400 acres of locally planted strawberries in 2015, the majority of which are grown in the Arroyo Grande Valley and near Nipomo. In fact, strawberries rival wine grapes as the top crop in San Luis Obispo County, earning them their own annual festival in Arroyo Grande each year in May! With that in mind, all of us over at The Steakhouse thought May would be the perfect time to showcase one of the Central Coast’s top crops!
