October Local Featured Item: Jack Creek Farms Pumpkin
It’s official: pumpkin season is in full effect almost everywhere you look, and The Steakhouse at the Paso Robles Inn is no exception. From pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice lattes, to pumpkin seeds and pumpkin bread: pumpkin is the most popular flavor of Fall, especially when paired with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove to achieve that Autumn aroma we all know and love. This month, enjoy freshly farmed Pumpkin from Jack Creeks Farms in a variety of carefully crafted plates at The Steakhouse as we celebrate another local ingredient this October.
Jack Creek Farm’s Pumpkins & Legacy
The oldest pumpkin farm in San Luis Obispo county, Jack Creek Farms is the authority on all-things pumpkin in our neck of the woods. Their pumpkin legacy began years ago in the late 1950’s when Miles Barlogio planted the farm’s first pumpkins along the fertile banks of Jack Creek. In 1960, Miles opened a roadside stand known as the “Barlogio Pumpkin Center”, where he began selling pumpkins to the public. In those days, the pumpkins sold for just 25 cents each on an “honor system” where customers would choose and weigh their own pumpkin on a scale and leave money in a jar. Since then, Jack Creek Farms has gone through many changes, but one thing has stayed the same: to continue the family tradition of adding new crops and activities to the farm each year, just as “Grandpa” did!
This year, the 5th generation family farm has planted over 60 different varieties for their main harvest of the year, including sugar pie pumpkins for pie making, jack-o-lantern type for carving, huge 100-pound pumpkins, tiny pumpkins, heirloom Cinderella pumpkins, orange, yellow, green, cream, and white pumpkins—even striped pumpkins—all to ensure that you find your perfect pumpkin this Fall.
