SLO’s Most Instagram-Worthy Ice Cream Shops

Warm summers in San Luis Obispo mean non-stop cravings for the best ice cream around. Not frozen yogurt or doughnuts – but only real ice-cream will hit the spot. The recent heat wave in southern and central California only exacerbates the craving, and to celebrate National Ice Cream Day on July 15th this month, a creamy scoop may just be non-negotiable. To get that perfect #CentralCoasting photo, be sure to stop into one of the trendy, totally Instagram-worthy Ice Cream shops below. The cuteness of these local spots really are the cherry on top of a sweet experience!

Rolld Ice Cream

At Rolld Ice Cream in downtown San Luis Obispo, the process is part of the fun. This new creamery (only opened in the last couple months) makes use of the Thai process of making ice cream, which spills out cream and flavoring onto a cold tablet, stretches it out, and stretches and rolls it into ice cream right in front of your very eyes. Five or six of these little ice cream “rolls” are then added together to the cup, making an adorable and instagram-worthy ice cream creation. When ordering these freshly made creations, you can choose your cream-base, flavorings, and toppings to your heart’s desire. And with classic, cute options such as oreos, marshmallows, maraschino cherries, and all kinds of candy, Rolld is basically asking you to have fun with it. Rolld is new and immensely popular, so a wait may be in your future, but the fluffy, delicious, and gorgeous ice cream creation will be worth it.

Nite Creamery

Nite Creamery, which just opened a new location in downtown SLO’s Creamery Marketplace coincidentally, uses science for a better scoop. They find that using nitrogen in the process of creating ice cream creates a smoother, creamier, and better scoop of ice cream, and serve their “nitrocrafted” delights with ease. Serving their elegantly-crafted and fun flavors (such as Mint Mojito and Peanut Butter Nutella) in puffy, thick waffle cone that looks great in photos, Nite Creamery is a cool, refreshing, and fun place to grab a scoop. In keeping with their name, they are open nightly from 3:30-10:30 PM.

Negranti Creamery

Lactose intolerant? No problem! A staple of San Luis Obispo’s food truck and foodie community, Negranti Creamery has created fantastic flavors using sheep’s milk that not only tastes good but leaves you feeling good about the fresh, wholesome ingredients it’s made from. Negranti is opening a new location soon in the San Luis Obispo Public Market, which will offer their classic sheep’s milk ice cream in addition to regular cow’s milk ice cream. Locals rave about their ice cream flavors, which explore unique combinations and are always creamy and filled with natural flavor.

Batch Ice Cream

Batch is a purely customizable ice cream shop, where warm, gooey cookies combine with classic ice cream for delicious and easy-to-eat sandwiches. You can mix and match with the flavors you prefer – If you’d like a peanut butter cookie on one side, double chocolate on the other, and cookies and cream ice cream in the center – Batch can make that happen. Batch is located in downtown SLO and is a longstanding local favorite. Order a root beer float or ice cream on its own if you’re not feeling a sandwich, but you’re sure to be pleased with these tasty creations on a warm summer afternoon!
